The ACT in a Nutshell
The ACT consists of five sections: the English, Math, Reading, Science, and Essay. In a nutshell, though, the ACT is a reading test. Sure there is a math section, but the rest of the test is predominately a reading test, one that favors speed over everything else. The Science section is not a science test as you might assume; it is a reading test with science labs, experiments, graphs, and charts. For students who process information very quickly, the ACT is a great option for their college admissions tests.
How’d We Do?

I got a 34 on the ACT. I had a 34.25. If I had one more point on any of the other sections I could have gotten a 35! Thank you so much for all you have done for me! I will recommend you to all my friends!

ACT Tutoring on Long Island by Section
One of the things that makes the ACT both interesting and unique is that the ACT is divided into four major sections plus an essay section. This allows students who aren’t as strong in math to hide their scores a little more than they could if they took the SAT. This is because the SAT has two major sections plus an essay. The difference between the SAT and ACT comes down to just a few things. Simply put, the ACT is more about speed while the SAT is more about deeper thinking. However, we are not talking about in depth analysis. We are talking about surface level inferences and concepts. Where the ACT requires that students “scratch the surface,” the SAT requires that students scratch a little deeper. This is due to the speed component of the ACT.
ACT English Section
The first section of the ACT is the English Section. Tutoring for the English Section of the ACT needs to be done by an English teacher who is an expert in grammar and logical reasoning skills. It is not enough for an ACT tutor to simply know the rules of grammar. The English Section of the ACT requires small tricks and understandings that allow students to limit their mistakes. Limiting mistakes on the ACT English Section is critical to success and a good ACT English tutor on Long Island knows how to do this. English ACT tutoring needs to focus on the understanding that the ACT English Section is not simply 75 grammar questions to be completed in 45 minutes. It is a test of test-taking skills mixed with ACT grammar. ACT grammar is specific grammar that shows up again and again. Once students have been tutored correctly by a great ACT English tutor, they can move through the section and conquer it.
ACT Math Section
The second section of the ACT is the ACT Math Section. Tutoring for the ACT Math Section must be done by a math tutor with experience to know how to get students through the ACT Math Section. Due to timing issues, students often struggle with finishing the ACT Math Section. Tutors need to be both experts in mathematics that cover everything including algebra, geometry, and algebra 2/trig and understand how to teach students how to think for the test. Many students begin ACT tutoring on Long Island without having finished the algebra 2 curriculum. This poses a problem because the ACT math tutor needs to be proficient in algebra 2 curriculum so he or she can teach students what they don’t know while reinforcing what they do know. That’s just one reason why our ACT Math tutors are licensed, experienced classroom teachers. The ACT tutor must be able to teach and review at the same time. ACT students will find success when their ACT Math tutor on Long Island is skilled in differentiating instruction.
ACT Reading Section
The ACT Reading Section is a difficult section for many students because of the number of questions and the limited time to answer these questions. The best ACT Reading tutors on Long Island understand this and show students creative avenues to explore while taking the ACT Reading Section. Tutors need to reinforce good reading strategies in conjunction with test taking strategies specific to the ACT. Since speed is such a concern, ACT tutors need to be able to convey a varied array of reading comprehension strategies to ensure that students know how to maneuver the passages and questions. The best ACT Reading tutors on Long Island can inspire students with the confidence and know how to decipher the meaning of passages and what questions are asking. This is so critical to ACT success and the best ACT tutors on Long Island can show students how to excel on the Reading Section. A 36 is not out of reach if students know how to “read the right way” and properly take the ACT Reading Section. We have been so successful on the ACT Reading Section because we make this a focus.
ACT Science Section
Although the ACT Science Section sounds like a science test, it is not. The ACT Science Section is an extension of the ACT Reading Section in that there is no real science being tested. In other words, students need to know how to read for information, not have background knowledge of science and scientific concepts. One of the jobs of the ACT Science tutor on Long Island is to show students how to take this section. The ACT Science Section is comprised of graphs, tables, and figures, and knowing what is important and what is not is paramount to a student’s success. The best ACT science tutors on Long Island know and understand this concept and can convey to their students that the ACT Science Section should be called the ACT Science Reading Section. One main focus of our ACT Science tutoring is showing students how to manage their fatigue in conjunction with understanding how to find answers quickly. This has led to great success and many scores well into the 30s.
ACT Essay Section
The ACT Essay Section involves perspectives. The ACT has historically focused on perspectives and the various viewpoints needed to think critically. While this is difficult in the beginning the best ACT Essay Section tutors on Long Island know how to show students how to think for the essay and write the best essay within the short 40 minute time frame. Our approach to the ACT Essay allows students to score very high because they follow their ideas along with our formatting to put together the best response. The ACT Essay Section may be a different essay to write, but students who are tutored the right way on the section can and do score exceptionally high.
In the end, ACT tutoring on Long Island needs to focus on the student. Our ACT tutors are all experts in the classroom and one on one with ACT students. We are here to help and believe in providing the best service possible. Please feel free to contact us at any time for a free consultation to help you decide on which type of ACT tutoring works for you.
